AN-004Problem Solving

Why does my retention drop in the middle?

Your hook worked — then attention decayed on schedule. Middles die when nothing is planned to reset them.

The Diagnosis

A mid-video retention slide almost never means your content got worse at the 40% mark. It means the attention your hook earned decayed on its natural curve — attention always does — and nothing was scheduled to reset it. The hook is a one-time payment; the middle runs on a subscription, and the subscription is change: a re-hook every so often, a new environment, a shift in how the information is delivered even when the information itself is the same point continuing. Pull up your retention graph and find the timestamps where the slope steepens — then look at the video at those exact moments. You'll almost always find a stretch where nothing changed: same shot, same delivery, same energy. That's not a content problem. That's a cadence problem, and cadence is fixable in the edit.
