Emotional Distance Scaling
Shot size is an emotional dial — the same sentence hits different at arm's length and at portrait distance.
Camera distance controls intimacy — closer shots raise the emotional stakes.
Why it works
Camera distance maps to emotional distance: wide shots observe, mediums converse, close-ups confide. Moving down the shot-size ladder raises the personal stakes of the moment — the frame gets closer because the content just did.
Execution steps
- 1
EWS: subject <10% of frame, 24-35mm, tripod/drone, high elevation
- 2
WS: subject ~20-35% of frame, full body
- 3
MWS: knees up
- 4
MS: waist up (default YouTube shot)
- 5
MCU: chest up (highest-retention educational framing)
- 6
CU: head dominates frame, eyes primary focus
- 7
ECU: eyes/hands/mouth/object only
Where to deploy
- MCU as primary talking-head
- CU for hooks/emotional peaks/punchlines
- ECU sparingly for product detail/reaction emphasis
- EWS never for educational openers
