The Mood Grade
The reason two identical videos can feel cheap or cinematic — color sets the emotional temperature before a word lands.
Warm tones read as energy, cool tones as calm — viewers feel the grade before they notice it.
Why it works
Viewers feel a frame's color before they think about it. Warm tones read as energy, urgency, and intimacy; cool tones read as calm, focus, and distance. These associations are learned and context-dependent rather than hardwired — but they're consistent enough that an entire craft of color grading is built on them.
Execution steps
- 1
60-30-10 color distribution rule (60% dominant/background, 30% secondary/props, 10% accent/text)
- 2
Warm-Hook Cool-Sustain: grade hook (0-5s) warm (+10 orange/+5 red HSL), core content neutral/cool, CTA/close return to warm
Where to deploy
- Structural color grading across a video's timeline rather than single flat grade
- CTAs and hooks
