The Time Bank
Platforms sell attention, so they promote whoever banks the most of it — this is the currency underneath the recommendation system.
Total minutes deposited across all viewers — the account platforms pay recommendations from.
What it actually measures
Watch time is reach multiplied by hold — views times stay time. It rewards the complete skill set: packaging strong enough to earn the click and craft strong enough to keep the viewer. One number, both halves of the job, which is why feeds lean on it.
How to read it
- 1
It's a total across all viewers, so it grows from either side: more viewers, or longer holds.
- 2
Diagnose which side is weak before fixing anything — a reach problem and a hold problem have opposite treatments.
- 3
Longer videos bank more per viewer, but only if held. Padded length loses the hold that makes length pay.
- 4
Classic misread: copying a long-form strategy for the watch-time math without the density to survive it.
